The Story …
Elias Wakefield (Burt Lancaster) is a tough, resourceful frontiersman living in Kentucky in the early 19th century.
Dissatisfied with the settled life and yearning for the freedom and opportunities of the West, he decides to leave Kentucky and head to Texas with his young son, Little Eli (Donald MacDonald).
They embark on their journey full of hope and dreams of a better life …

As they travel, they encounter various challenges and characters. They meet Hannah Bolen, a kind and intelligent schoolteacher, who takes a liking to Elias and hopes to persuade him to settle down and embrace a more civilized life. Despite her affections, Elias remains determined to continue their journey west.
Their travels bring them into conflict with Stan Bodine, a crooked and dangerous riverboat gambler.
Bodine and his gang pose a constant threat to Elias and Little Eli, leading to tense and dangerous encounters. Elias’s strength and resourcefulness are put to the test as he defends his son and himself from Bodine’s schemes.
Along the way, Elias and Little Eli experience the harsh realities of frontier life, including rough terrain, wild animals, and the ever-present threat of violence. Their bond as father and son grows stronger as they face these hardships together, relying on each other for support and encouragement.
The climax of the story occurs when Elias and Bodine face off in a dramatic and violent showdown.
With courage and determination, Elias manages to defeat Bodine, securing their safety and continuing their journey westward.
In the end, Elias and Little Eli reach the outskirts of Texas, filled with hope and anticipation for the new life they will build. The film concludes on a hopeful note, with father and son looking forward to the opportunities and adventures that lie ahead in the vast and untamed land of Texas …
